The US Department of Energy's Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) is developing next generation processing methods for the recycling of transuranic (TRU) isotopes from spent nuclear fuel (SNF). These methods are expected to be phased into existence over the next 20 to 40 years as the next generation nuclear energy systems are implemented. The TRU isotopes from SNF are a significant fission energy source with ultra long half lives and nuclear cross sections that make them fit for burnup in a fast-spectrum nuclear system. One family of processing options under development uses sequential aqueous solvent extraction steps. The relevant effluent from this process is a solution containing TRU nitrates. The Generation IV program nominally projects an initial deployment of such a fast burner system in ~2030 A.D. Therefore, there is be a need for interim storage form for the time period between nitrate extraction and TRU burning.
