摘要

The use of hydrogen as an energy source, particularly in automobiles, can help to resolve several environmental and energy issues. The number of automobiles owned increased from 391.1 million to 676.2 million in just 14 years (1980-1996). The use of gasoline or diesel in automobiles results in release of a number of harmful gases including NOx, CO, and CO_2. For example, average annual increase of CO_2 emission over the past decade has been 1.3 per cent or nearly 300 million tonnes a year. Hydrogen operated automobiles releases only water (H_2O) into the atmosphere. Therefore, the use of hydrogen (when combined with production from nuclear reactors) creates the opportunity to have not just "low-emission vehicles" but zero-emission vehicles. In automobiles, hydrogen may be used in two ways; fuel cells or a direct hydrogen combustion engine. However in both cases onboard storage of hydrogen is necessary.
