Work is currently underway at MIT, supported under a NERI program grant, to design a gas-cooled fast reactor (GFR) coupled directly to a supercritical CO_2 Brayton power conversion system (PCS). Most of the PCS development effort, in turn, is the subject of a DOE/Sandia Gen-IV funded project, which focuses on indirect cycle applications. (1) The design is now in its third generation, having evolved from an initial integral version similar to the GA GTMHR, to a dispersed component arrangement similar to the ESKOM PBMR, to the final layout described here.
