Understanding Team Communication Characteristics Using Social Network Analysis

Large process control systems such as nuclear power plants (NPPs) are operated by teams consisting of several operators. An important aspect of team is an interaction and coordination of operators within workplaces. In this environment, operators communicate with each other to share situational information. However, inappropriate communication can cause lack of situational information and lead to serious consequences of systems [1-3]. This means that it is indispensible to understand the characteristics of team communication, which can provide useful insights for preventing inappropriate communication. Many researchers have endeavored to investigate the characteristics of communication. However, previous studies seem to have a problem because most of them tried to characterize communications without a firm theoretical basis [4].
