The unique capabilities of a NACC may enable hybrid systems with a potential pathway to a zero-carbon electrical grid. The requirement for the NACC is that nuclear heat input be delivered at temperatures exceeding 500℃. That requirement defines the reactor requirements and the use of an FHR.A nuclear-renewable hybrid system provides the mechanism to (1) match the capabilities of fossil fuels to provide energy on demand and (2) enable base-load operation of nuclear and renewable energy generating systems. The capital intensive characteristics of nuclear and renewables imply high capacity factors are required to minimize costs.This is a new set of options where we are only beginning to examine the technical design space.
