The Societal Risk of Severe Accidents in Nuclear Power Plants

As the resulf of the release of radioactive material that occurred at the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors subsequent to the earthquake and associated tsunami, major changes are being considered regarding the regulation of nuclear power plants world-wide, including the establishment of new requirements for existing plants as well as more stringent criteria for future plants. A number of countries are also reconsidering whether nuclear power should be any fraction of their future energy portfolio.
