A Gamma Dose Rate Estimation Model For Radioactive Waste Containers

Discrepancies (see Table II) are found to be very low, within 7% maximum the computed value with respect to the measured value. They are therefore inferior to the uncertainties associated to the experimental measurements, that, as described above, are around 15% at least. It cannot be identified any common trend in the discrepancies, that appear to be, at a first sight, random. However, the larger discrepancies found in some cases are probably due to the internal inhomogeneities of the waste form which can alter both the dose rate measurement results and the MicroShield model results. It has in fact to be noted that the main hypothesis of the model is the homogeneity of the waste form content and the uniformity of the activity distribution within the waste drum. However, the model results are in overall quite satisfactory agreement with the measured values of the dose rate for the set of radwaste drums that we have considered for validation.
