The Status and Prospect of Regulatory Procedures for Permanently Shut-down Nuclear Power Plants in Korea

Recently the regulatory body has been preparing the decommissioning stage in Korea, since it was to decide the permanently shut-down for Kori NPP (Nuclear Power Plant) 1 unit in June 2015. Although our institute with technical authority, the KINS(Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety), performed the peer reviews for the construction permits of 4 NPPs and operating licenses of 22 NPPs, the regulation work and experience during transition phase (the permanently shut-down period before the approval of decommissioning plan) is still in early stages and challenging fields.
