Shielding Analysis of Content Type 4 for Addendum 3 to 9977 Shipping Package SARP (U)

The 9977 shipping package is a general purpose package originally designed to ship plutonium and highly enriched uranium metals and oxides. This analysis was performed to support adding a general contents category for small quantities of radioactive materials.Special Form items falling within the small gram quantity (SGQ) contents description may be shipped; packed in aluminum peanuts, aluminum or stainless steel wire gauze, or aluminum foil; or placed directly in the 6-inch containment vessel (6CV). Other SGQ contents may be shipped in food pack cans or engineered containers. If shielding (in addition to content container, 6CV, and package structure) is required to meet the surface dose rate requirement for the contents (2 millisievert [mSv/hr]), the contents may be placed within a SGQ shielded container (designated as SGQ-SC1, SGQ-SC2, or SGQ-SC3).
