Investigation of FPGA Based Real Time Processing in Neutron Imaging

An FPGA based real time image processing system has been demonstrated for neutron imaging applications. Testing and characterization of the system was performed at the PULSTAR neutron imaging facility indicating that median filtering improves the SNR of the image with large window size while conserving the spatial resolution of the image. Additionally, it can be observed that SNR was degraded when a 3×3 window was used as compared with the raw image. When the size of the pixel variation in the raw image is larger than the 3×3 kernel, the SNR degrades. It can be observed that 7×7 window size improves the SNR while preserving spatial resolution. The presented preliminary study demonstrates the feasibility of implementing an advanced real-time image processing system for neutron imaging applications including dynamic non-destructive investigations in real-time.
