The severe accident research platform at KIT includes several experimental facilities which are designed to study the remaining severe accident safety issues, including the corium coolability in the RPV, possible melt dispersion to the reactor cavity and molten corium concrete interaction. These facilities are unique in providing experimental programs in specific fields of core damage initiation up to hydrogen behavior and are designed to be complementary to other European facilities and experimental platforms to form a coherent European nuclear experimental network.The experimental programs are strongly coupled with other European projects. The experimental results are used for the development of models and their implementation in the severe accident codes such as e.g. ASTEC and MELCOR. This helps to capitalize the knowledge obtained in the field of severe accident research in codes and the scientific databases, thus preserving and diffusing this knowledge to a large number of current and future end-users.
