The significance of this research is to evaluate the potential use of robotic manipulators to increase worker health, safety, and productivity by alleviating the physical strain of working with extended arms in a glove box, which requires frequent breaks due to hand fatigue and may lead to musculoskeletal injuries. The research could also reduce potential health and safety concerns by minimizing human interactions with hazardous materials. The technology being developed can potentially support projects with ongoing DOE operations such as the Advanced Retrieval Project (ARP) and in the Materials and Fuel complex (Materials Characterization Laboratory) by performing delicate and routine tasks in a more efficient manner.
