Estimating Transportation Worker Dose from Hypothetical Spent Nuclear Fuel Shipments

The quantification of dose to transportation workers from radioactive shipments has been demonstrated using UDFs and DOE's START routing tool. Using DOE's START tool, the routes which minimize distance have been determined for two origin sites to two hypothetical destination sites by rail and one origin site to an intermediate point over the road. While the routes generated and the sites selected as destinations do not represent actual routing decisions and are not illustrative of the actual routing methodology, they are used to show the process for estimating dose over transportation routes from shutdown commercial nuclear power plant sites to different destinations.
