Used foundry sand evolves from the various processes within the foundry. Molding, coremaking and casting cleaning processes are the major arenas from which used sand must be extracted and disposed of, in some fashion. The major mineral in used sands is most usually silica sand, although olivine, zircon and chromite sands may also be present as either major or minor constituents. Used sands contain other ingredients, such as clay, combus- tible matter from a variety of carbon and/or other organic products, residual chemical binders from various core pro- cesses and water, which may have come in contact with every- thing.
