The object of this paper is to present to the reader it concise picture of what the Chinese foundry industry would be, 10 years from now. The paper begins with it briefing of the present status of the industry. The total output of castings had increased from around 8,000,000 tons per year in the late '70s to 11,626,170 tons in 1994. Some key foundries, possessing a technical level of the '8Os, have emerged. Modern melting, molding and quality control equipment (with figures), of which about 50-70/100 were imported from industrialized countries, have been installed, which contributed much to the upgrading of casting quality. The general technical level achieved by the industry (with examples) is also described. The total number of foundries and its distribu- tion in different regions of the country ix graphically shown. Consumption of castings in various engineering sectors in 1989- 1991 is tabulated.
