摘要

With the economy in a funk and railroad industry watchers not particularly upbeat about 2009, one of the most simple ways for short lines to help themselves to a better future is right in front of them: gathering information. You just need to know where to find it and how to use it to enhance profits and make customers smile. These times are tough for railroads. Through mid-November, carloads were down more than 9 percent, marking the sixth consecutive week of accelerating rates of decline. Short lines mirrored Class I performance in both magnitude and commodity trends; coal and grain stayed about even, building products were way down.
