Always a railroader's daughter

It's the late 1950s, when most little girls spend Sunday afternoons helping their mothers cook dinner, or playing hopscotch with their girly friends. But I wasn't like most little girls. I spent Sunday afternoons shooting imaginary robbers and desperadoes from the top bunk of a cabin car (as my father taught me to call the caboose). I was a great shot! Over time, you couldn't find one desperado within a thousand miles of the Altoona, Pa., railroad yards, then the world's largest rail and shop complex.My father, Arthur F. Emmerson, worked in testing and research for the Pennsylvania Railroad's research center on 9th Avenue and 17th Street (now, in part, a museum).
