NORTHEAST CORRIDOR BRIDGE PROJECTS

I enjoyed Bob Johnston's article, "Bridge Out!" [pages 38-45, February], about the bridges along the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., and Boston. I managed the Recovery Act grant that paid for much of the replacement of the Niantic River bridge as a Federal Railroad Administration employee at the time. The lesson to take from the article is that there's a high cost to the feast and famine way that Congress funds Am-trak. An example is the replacement of the lift span of the Thames River bridge. While it was completed without a special appropriation, Amtrak had to defer other vital capital projects on the Northeast Corridor to finance the project.
