New operator to run Cass Scenic Railroad

Cass Scenic Railroad, operated as a state agency since 1963, has a new operator. In October, the West Virginia State Rail Authority accepted a 10-year lease on the railroad from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley will operate the railroad using existing employees, rolling stock, and locomotives, including Shay No. 5, above, near Old Spruce in May 2013. The nonprofit Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association will continue to restore Climax No. 9 and hold its annual railfan photography weekend in the spring.
