The economic difficulties that the UK is currently experiencing have highlighted the public's plight concerning rapidly increasing costs of living. Petrol and diesel prices are impinging at a time when mortgages, heating and food prices are making equivalent competing demands on family budgets. Fuel prices, collapsing vehicle values and revised vehicle excise duty tariffs have prompted motorists to consider their travel options. Furthermore it is likely that there will be an increase in family holidays taken in the UK as foreign travel is under threat following costs escalating in line with inflation. In turn this will place an additional reliance on the UK's transport infrastructure as it copes with the demand during peak periods. Union disputes and other demonstrations are 'fuelling the fire' and have added to the dilemma by emphasising the potential restrictions of fuel availability at the pumps.
