Image processing technologies have been applied to various fields. In the field of factory automation (FA) such as automobile assembly, we have been developing image processing technologies (2- and 3-dimension) as key technologies according to the survey on internal needs and seeds, and introduced internally developed image processing units on many production lines. We have also promoted automation of material handling (feeding) of isolated heavy-duty jobs. In view of the job conditions such as many types of workpieces, wide dispersion of workpiece positions on pallets and great variation in workpiece shapes, we have developed an image processing unit capable of segment processing by contour line extraction and short-time recognition by combining model and gray pattern matching. This paper introduces an example of implementation as a V6 cylinder material handling system connected to a robot via ME-NET.
