(1) In terms of technology, "high efficiency" and "reduced emissions" will be key points for future automotive power sources. (2) For new power sources to penetrate the market, the establishment of "technology" will be important, but simultaneous development of "product" and "market conditions" will also be necessary. (3) The fuel cell is a promising power source for the future, but satisfying the requirements for its acceptance will be difficult. Hydrogen storage technology and cost reductions are necessary, and the actual penetration of FC vehicles will probably be after 2010. (4) Market needs such as the supply of energy, CO2 reduction, and emissions reduction are expected to become increasingly pressing. Thus, while proceeding with technical developments of new power sources such as fuel cells, we should also give every effort possible to the currently viable technologies, gasoline and diesel engines and hybrid systems.
