Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles

This paper will discuss the current status of development of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles, currently gaining attention as the 'clean' car for the next century. The Toyota FCHV released in 1996 used the latest hydrogen absorbing alloy tank. This was followed in 1997 by the release of the world's first fuel cell powered vehicle to use reformed methanol. Toyota has been progressing with the development of component parts in parallel with the development of the test vehicles themselves. For example, 1999 saw the release of a fuel cell stack with a 65 liter volume and 70 kW of power. However, the overall issues of fuel choice, fuel infrastructure, standardization and safety standards need to be addressed, in addition to the many existing technical issues that remain, in order to see the realization of fuel cell hybrid vehicles.
