The Radical and Socialist Tradition in British Planning: From Puritan Colonies to Garden Cities

The history of modern town planning in Britain can be seen as a story of how a movement intended to achieve radical social reform in the fields of land and housing became compressed into an increasingly institutional and professional mould. From being part of an assault on the power of property, it has morphed into being a techni-calised process of government. This certainly is how Bowie portrays it in this study. Going further back in time than it has been usual for planning historians to do in recent years, he broadly examines two key strands of town planning's early history. One strand considers the experiments in creating model settlements motivated by religion and philanthropy. The last of these especially were created by those with the power and wealth to do so, whose well-intentioned and generally decent values were certainly a powerful bequest to the early town planning movement.
