In a recent issue of the newsletter I edit, Chapter Seven News, I wrote an article on mobile home sites. Its main purpose was to examine future possibilities for this particular planning category. How might it be used to better satisfy certain needs - for short-term housing for young single people or semi-rural retirement possibilities for people with limited incomes, for example? Could sites be made more attractive and sustainable, through better landscaping and design, autonomous services and so on? I had in mind the plotland developments of the inter-war era (described in Colin Ward's and Dennis Hardy's masterly study Arcadia for All), the few remaining examples of which are now widely respected for their architectural, environmental and social merits.
