Climate change - a special case in the planning system?

There is increasing scientific consensus that the climate is changing - and, moreover, that climatic changes will intensify, with potentially catastrophic implications for global ecosystems. While the science is increasingly well understood and the likely changes to our climate well documented, there remains a significant gap in perception among the general public and policy-makers as to the urgency with which we must address what is increasingly widely viewed as a climate change crisis. Action is required now, and on an unprecedented scale, to deal with the climate change challenge. And spatial planning has a major and positive contribution to make in meeting this challenge.
