THE QUESTION OF PROPERTY

Three things roil American political and social life more than any other. The first is race, which continues to feed bigotry and hatred, even as it has inspired the highest ideals of equality and justice. The second is religion, which seems to come in great historical waves breaking upon society, always threatening the founders' goal of a country that is religious, but in which religion does not rule. The third is property - private ownership of land and everything else that can be individualised - which constitutes the material foundation of American individualism.
