This ethnographic study of a village in the Ngadha region of Flores, Indonesia, sets out to 'unpick the nuances of the different stakeholders' views, attitudes and priorities to examine the sources of the conflicts of tourism' (p. 36), and the result is a book of fascinating insights into the contested zones of cultural change and community development through tourism. Rarely can issues such as acculturation and the search for authenticity have been scrutinised in such detail as in 'Hopes, Dreams and Realities', with the perspective of villagers and tourists drawn through observation, interviews and informed analysis over a period of sixteen years.
