The book "River Tourism" edited by Bruce Prideaux and Malcolm Cooper is one of a growing number of books addressing tourism in specific ecosystems (e.g., Lakes: Hall & Harkonen, 2006; and Mountains: Gode, Price, & Zimmermann, 2000). The various authors argue that each of these ecosystems are attractive to tourists and are recognised as being 'fragile' and susceptible to the negative social and ecological impacts of tourism but have been relatively neglected in the tourism literature. This book is typical of the 'compilation' genre where a mix of contributions on a particular subject is sandwiched between an introductory and concluding chapter without much attempt at structure or organisation. This particular approach to publication was not appealing at the time and it is no more attractive for its rarity today.
