Refrigerated freight in Italy

The international refrigerated transport railway company Interfrigo was founded on 24 October 1949 at the initiative of the railways in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland, later joined by Greece, Spain, Luxembourg and Turkey. The remit of this company, which had its main office in Brussels and headquarters in Basel, consisted mainly of the construction, leasing and management of rolling stock and infrastructure necessary to transport goods under temperature-controlled conditions. This article aims to tell the story of this traffic in Italy from its early successes of the 1950s to its collapse in the early 2000s.
