EK-Special 135: Die DB vor 25 Jahren: 1994: Ausgabe West

This is the latest in a long-running series of EK Special bookazine-type publications looking at the German railway scene 25 years ago, in this case covering the first year of a unified pan-German rail network. A separate publication by the same title but with the suffix "Ausgabe Ost", covering the former DDR is also available, although of course there was some overlap between the two former networks. The 1990s were a period of considerable change for Germany's railways, and the first chapter describes the structure of Deutsche Bahn AG formed by merging the former East and West German national operators (Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn respectively). Other topics covered include the introduction of Class 6284 DMUs and Eurosprinter locos, freight line closures, east-west lines upgraded as part of the Verkehrsprojekt Deutsche Einheit, and the relatively short-lived Talgo night train modelled on its Spanish counterpart.
