OEBB tenders for double-deck EMUs

Austrian Federal Railways (OEBB) has published a tender for up to 95 double-deck EMUs. These are divided into three versions: up to 60 160 metre units, up to 30 105 metre and up to five 135 metre sets. The tender also asks for two speed variants - either 160 km/h or 200 km/h. The framework contract would be valid for ten years. Offers had to be delivered by 31 May. There are also options for a 30-year maintenance contract and for additional trailers to strengthen the shorter EMU sets at a later stage. The five 135 metre EMUs will probably be ordered by City Airport Train (CAT), which is an OBB subsidiary. The new EMUs would replace the existing fleet of double deck push-pull sets in service with both OEBB and CAT, which are suffering from corrosion problems. Another advantage of the new EMUs will be that the 160 metre version has more capacity than the 5-car push-pull sets in use around Austria at present.
