A SWEDISH ISLAND RAILWAY

Limestone quarrying on the Baltic island of Gotland, some 100 km east of the south Swedish mainland, has been carried on since the Middle Ages. In 1895, to meet the transport needs beyond those of man- and horse-power in the limestone quarry at Blase, a 600 mm gauge railway was built between the quarry, the kilns and the harbour. The line was only 1200 metres long but has a fascinating history; together with the associated museum, the site is today listed as an historical museum showing the workings of a 19th century limestone quarry, and especially the lives and conditions of those who worked there.
