This is another one of Le Train's excellent "bookazines", this time covering the Nantes-Bordeaux line via La Rochelle, and connecting lines to the Atlantic coast. The book starts with a history of the line, built in stages by different companies, this section being illustrated with very old and interesting black-and-white photos. The second chapter details the many branches off the main line, to seaside resorts and ports, again with plenty of very old photos. The next one describes some of the important changes that have been made to the main line over the years, including the move out of Nantes Etat, electrification at each end - the line is still largely non-electrified - but also the construction alongside on the LGV Tours-Bordeaux. Next comes a short chapter to the "iconic" viaduct at Cubzac-les-Ponts, which features on the cover and is often the chosen spot for photographers. A long chapter covers the operation of the line, showing the various traction which has been used over the years, from steam through to the classic Class BB 67400 diesels, which have only just been succeeded by bi-mode units. The chapter includes the local stopping trains around Nantes, La Rochelle and Bordeaux. A short section covers freight. A whole chapter is devoted to the reign of Class CC 65000 diesels, the "sous-marins" (submarines) which are forever associated with the line. The final main chapter looks in detail at the line today, which sadly has some very long speed restrictions and will soon be temporarily closed, in part, for rebuilding. The book finishes with up-to-date maps of the line. Another excellent book from Le Train.
