As expected, Greek tobacco production has declined substantially after last year's "decoupling" of EU subsidies. If market prices disappoint this year, volumes will shrink even further. Greek tobacco production declined by almost 80 percent following last year's government decision to decouple subsidies from production altogether. As a result, the country that had been producing annual tobacco volumes of 108,000 tons to 115,000 tons during the previous four years produced approximately 24,500 tons in 2006, mostly the classical oriental varieties of Basma and Katerini.
