In a much-read article last year, Wayne Hall from the University of Queensland and Robert West from University College London proposed considering what they termed "the unthinkable," namely a prohibition on smoked tobacco products. (Hall and West, "Thinking about the unthinkable: a de facto prohibition on smoked tobacco products," Addiction 2008) Writing about the fact that a de jure prohibition of tobacco was not currently being considered, Hall and West nonetheless noted that "people are now beginning to talk about de facto prohibition resulting from a combination of policies that would make the sale and use of smoked tobacco untenable."
