As Tobacco Reporter went to press, the tobacco industry was anxiously awaiting a decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on menthol. A move to prohibit the substance would have far-reaching consequences as mentholated cigarettes account for about one-third of U.S. cigarette sales. Market leaders Altria Group and British American Tobacco each have considerable exposure to the menthol market.
