A Comparison of Granular Additives for use in Cigarette Filters

A great deal of work is being carried out across the industry on the use of various granular additives to modify the composition of cigarette smoke, the majority of which is aimed at the reduction of toxic compounds on the Hoffmann list. There are many different additives potentially available and to evaluate every single material in actual cigarettes would be a massive undertaking. Accordingly, Filtrona has developed a relatively simple screening procedure that allows granular materials to be tested during smoking so that an initial measure of their activity towards smoke can be obtained.
