Women have traditionally made food purchasing decisions, but now they have more buying power and therefore the influence is there as well," says Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing at the California Avocado Commission. That purchasing influence is what has led the CAC to focus its marketing efforts on the avocado's main purchaser: women between the ages of 25 and 54 years old. "There's more purchasing power that is affected by women's decisions than ever before," DeLyser says. To leverage that purchasing power, the CAC has created a multichannel marketing campaign that appeals to women by relaying the healthy benefits of the avocado, as well as offering handling advice and recipes.
