An automatic measurement of pills on clothes using computer image processing was introduced. A backlighting method which projects pills as shadows in light was used to obtain the section image. This method can reduce the influence of colors and patterns of clothes and the light source. The pills can be extracted easily from the section image by simple image processing. However, several continuous images are necessary to measure the sizes and number of pills in an area more precisely.
