La technologie sol-gel est connue depuis plus de 150 ans. Suite à la production des gels à basse température dans les années 1970, cette technologie a à nouveau éveillé l'intérêt et, ces dernières années, les études ont été orientées vers la production des enductions minces. Les applications principales sont la protection des lentilles optiques (contre les griffes), la protection des batiments (humidité et graffiti), la production des poudres céramiques, des fibres optiques et des aérogels, produits super-isolants; elles exigent en général des températures d'application élevées et s'obtiennent à partir de solutions alcooliques.%Sol-gel technology has been known about for over 150 years. With the production of gels at low temperatures in the 1970s, this technology kindled new interest and, over the last few years, studies have focused on the production of thin coatings. The main applications are for the protection of optical lenses (against scratches), the protection of buildings (against moisture and graffiti), the production of ceramic powders, optical fibres, aerogels and super insulating products. These generally require high application temperatures and are obtained with alcohol solutions.
