The Role Of Industrial Design In High Technology Manufacture

UK manufacturing is seen by many as practically extinct, yet it still accounts for 20% of the country's GDP, employs four million people and represents 60% of export earnings. What has changed? The main change has been the shift towards specialised high technology products and away from consumer goods. Products are also increasingly short lived, as new technologies are developed that supersede them. These changes all increase both the risks and opportunities associated with developing a new product. Here, the author looks at the changing markets and examines the importance of industrial design in helping today's manufacturers 'do a Dyson' or emulate the success of the iPod.
