Fit for the future

Climate change and material resource issues are becoming key business drivers in construction, with sustainability coming to the forefront of building procurement. The UK Government has committed itself to the sustainability agenda. A recent joint announcement by the ODPM, DEFRA and DTI confirmed that the Government intends to introduce a Code for Sustainable Buildings by 2006, with a draft outline due as early as January 2005. At the same time the Government has expressed its support for a Private Members Bill - the 'Sustainable and Secure Buildings Bill' - which would include standards for the recyclability of materials.
