The formulae developed in this technical note are not based on empirical rules or rules of thumb, but by having chosen particular values for all the variables in the known equations used for more detailed analysis. The development of the equations and the variables chosen are clearly indicated, so that if other influences are introduced such as cladding or different damping values the formulae can be modified to suit. It is interesting that all the equations in this note are independent of thickness apart from stress and deflection. The deflection is independent of length since the damping value (and hence magnification factor), which is dependent on length, is fixed. It must be emphasised from the outset that the formulae presented are for estimating and preliminary design purposes and are not meant as a substitute for full detailed analysis which must always be carried out. They were developed and refined into their simplest terms for my personal use over the years for the reasons set out below.
