As predicted in our last issue, the big producing countries' pistachio crops seem to be turning out smaller than hoped after unfavourable weather Traders have recently been talking the Iranian crop down to as little as 130/140,000 tonnes, compared with over 200,000 expected in July and early forecasts as high as 280,000. Some observers think the losses are being exaggerated and expect at least 150,000 tonnes but that would still be a disappointing crop. Along with a strong US market, this has tended to keep Iranian producer sellers' in reserved mood, hoping this will push up their income from the crop - which it does seem to be doing so far. In the month going to press, sellers' quotations for Iranian nuts shipped to Hamburg in the most widely-traded 28/30 and 20/22 sizes had risen to €8,500 and €8,300 respectively - about € 1,000/1,200 more than in the late summer months -after touching €8.600 at one stase.
