US pecan industry targets China with rising exports

US pecan exports rose 56% in September and October compared with the opening months of last season, amid sustained, strong Chinese demand for in-shell nuts. While drought has affected Mexican production, the 2020-21 global crop estimate has still risen to 155,900 kernel tonnes, 12% more than expected and 10% over 2019-20, Mexico remained the top source (49.6%) then the USA (407%). Globally, pecan supply is expected to reach 949 million lbs (430,000 tonnes) in 2022 and 1.2 billion (544,000 tonnes) by 2027 amid growth in South African and Chinese crops, a recent INC Conference was told. Some in the US industry have warned of potential 'oversupply' if demand fails to keep up with that pace of growth.
