Despite being the most capable of all Germany's generals during the Second World War, Field Marshal Erich von Manstein (1887-1973) has never gained the prominence of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, who is a much better-known figure in the popular understanding of the war, particularly in Britain. Major General Mungo Melvin, a fluent German speaker, was granted privileged access to the field marshal's personal papers by the Manstein family. Melvin's military background and deep knowledge of military history has produced a detailed picture of Manstein - one that outclasses even the latest German publications, which tend to see Manstein simply as a war criminal while neglecting his impact on the military course of the war.
