Michael I. Gross, an ethicist and professor of political science at Haifa University, has written a sobering, important book, with complicated arguments pointing in complex directions. He addresses moral dilemmas and emergent lessons of asymmetrical warfare and proposes new rules. Alongside (often disputatious) thinkers and controversialists like Avishai Margalit, Asa Kasher and Avner Cohen, with the frequent transatlantic engagement of Michael Walzer, he forms part of a renaissance of Israeli philosophical examination of contemporary security dilemmas.
