Lloyd George at War 1916-18

The two world wars each produced an outstanding British civilian war leader: David Lloyd George in 1916-18 and Winston Churchill in 1940-45. Churchill's fame and reputation have thoroughly eclipsed that of his rival, who is probably little remembered by the British public, but Lloyd George has had his share of partisans among historians. In 1961, A J P Taylor claimed that of the two warlords, Lloyd George was the greater. More recently, John Grigg made a powerful case for Lloyd George in his multi-volume biography that was sadly unfinished at his death in 2001.
