Lloyd George at War 1916-1918

George H. Cassar begins his study of Lloyd George's wartime premiership with the bold assertion that the work of his protagonist 'between 1916 and 1918, although invariably praised by recent scholars, has generally received only superficial investigation. In fact, only the late John Grigg's last study (which was not quite finished when he difid) covers the years of his war leadership in detail' (p. xix). This will come as a surprise to those such as David Woodward, Brock Millman, Peter Rowland (not to mention the present reviewer), all of whom have laboured long and hard in the field of Lloyd George's wartime premiership. It is all the more peculiar given that Cassar has cited works by each of these authors in his bibliography and footnotes.
